I was listening to a live version of Morning Bell on my ipod sitting on a New York subway train, and it got to that intense, amazing part after the "sleepy jack, the fire drill. Running around etc etc. " bit, and it just hit me like a sack of bricks. How fucking brilliant?

Anyone else ever get punched in the gut by Radiohead in public, where you can't hide your tears?

Or maybe I'm the only jackass...

I was crying on my bike the other day. I don't think anyone saw, it was a quiet day on the trail. Can't remember what it was that set me off. Something in the Cambridge show.

the early b-sides have a certain hold over me, like "stupid car" or "you never wash up after yourself". not sure what it is. nostalgia. the simplicity of it. sometimes remembering how young thom was is a factor, and imaging all the stress he was starting to hold.

I've never understood people that cry over songs or books or TV shows or movies.

Except if it's the episode of Futurama where Fry's dog waits and waits and waits for him, or the part in Lilo & Stitch where Lilo's gonna get taken away by the child custody people because those are just TT_TT
sometimes you need the ocean to show you grace and children laughing to remind you you were once young, catching moths in the dark of your bedroom ocean out side your window on a night without moon. sometimes you need to jump in the ocean with all your clothes on and whoop like a loon in a lake then remember you are human with a human face.

what about the episode of futurama where fry talks to leela while she's in a coma because the doctors said it would help and when she regains consciousness he's holding her hand saying, "please wake up"?

or the one where he think his brother stole his name and all his goals and aspirations, like being the first astronaut on mars, only to find out his brother missed him so much when he disappeared that he named his son after fry :icon_cry:

no wait, this is about radiohead. how to disappear completely used to get me all the time

me, many times. while driving my car and listening to LSP live. or On The Beach. or Nude. (just to name a few...). that was in public. and in private - I'm not able to count how many times it happened... lots of RH's songs make me very melancholic and all the factors contribute to this: Thom's voice, the lyrics, the melody...

I might be a bit of a cry-baby but I tend to react very emotionally when listening to music, and especially when listening to Radiohead. I guess it's mostly because I feel that they are being very sincere and Thom means what he's saying - their music is 100% bullshit-free. Their emotional honesty, as well as the combination of dark lyrics and the most beautiful melodies, always gets a response out of me.
So I have to pay some attention when compiling playlists for work, for example Videotape or Street Spirit can't be included... It's not only RH though which can make me cry - others include eg Elliott Smith, Elbow (Friend of Ours makes me cry instantly every time), Nina Simone.

This is in contrast with many other artists which use all the tricks in the book to make emotionally moving songs, but they just end up sounding fake and mostly just irritate the shit out of me. Worst example: Celine Dion, ewww.
Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it.

I wouldn't put it better.
there's only one musician that used to get that emotional outburst out of me the way RH does - that's Jacques Brel.

hmm Radiohead used to make me cry, like nearly every listen to OKC + Kid A was intense --> be welling up for Exit Music... but now feel immune to it, probably listened to them too much and got bit desensitised. But yeah – good for you, crying in public is great and if more people did it the world would be a better place :)

the tourist once had a really hard effect on me towards the end. i was sitting on an empty train from my college back to my home town. it was beautiful really. the other one that had a close second was motion picture soundtrack on the same train a few weeks later. not the actual song itself, but that small little part at the end. i left my ipod running and i had completely forgot about it and i was looking out the window - the sun was at a really low point and was shining in through the window in that orange glow in my eyes almost blinding me but it was blinking because of the passing trees. as soon as the little heavenly sounds started to play and get into its high point a clearing with a river perfectly framed in the window as a bird flew over the train and out over the river and followed it like a path. the sun was absolutely perfect and the moment couldnt have been timed in a million years.

i still cry with radiohead but it usually coincides with the climax of the song i'm listening to - bodysnatchers being the first example coming to my mind - it's a kind of ball starting from the stomach and spreads out to my limbs and brain, makes me jump and cry OHMYGODTHISISFUCKINGAMAZINGROCKONROCKONROCKON WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! tears of happy rage, something like that
maybe it's communicative, they've been happier as a band after all.

Nah, neither one of those really made me cry
sometimes you need the ocean to show you grace and children laughing to remind you you were once young, catching moths in the dark of your bedroom ocean out side your window on a night without moon. sometimes you need to jump in the ocean with all your clothes on and whoop like a loon in a lake then remember you are human with a human face.
