It's my favorite Radiohead song and still can't understand if Thom is saying:

Quote

Here I'm alive

or

Quote

Here I'm allowed

"Alive" fits better with the mood of the song, but "allowed" fits with the next line...

Any of you guys have an idea?

Also, uh, should I feel like an idiot for not knowing this? I've been a Radiohead fan for a while but I only recently join Mortigi Tempo...

you've got all the lyrics here:

apparently it's 'I'm allowed'.

and don't feel like an idiot, that would be really absurd. we all were beginners once (I still am).

Yeah, but there are some obviously wrong lyrics on the GP lyric page (can't remember; haven't looked in a while, yada yada).

I think it's both depending on what he says at the moment.

In fact, those lyrics that can be either/or are some of the best, no?

wrong lyrics on GP??? now that's outrageous.

; )

after I wrote my previous post I checked some other pages for Idioteque lyrics, and indeed both versions are 'legitimate' it seems.

"The first of the children' Ive seen radiohead about 5 times... and I couldve swore everytime they played idoteque he alternated this line between. first of the children. fathers and the children. mothers and the children.

I agree the alternate lines are the best.

I swear I've heard him sing "this money's for the children" can't remember which show it was though.

also I believe the prime lyric is "here I'm allowed, everything alla the time" but ya, it mutates alla the time as does the above line
.

all is not as it seems
this is as it should be

,

Thomas please

it's "alive". always has been. i also WANTED to believe it's "allowed" for a long time, arguing with the next line and such. but that's stupid. let's not forget thom wrote a lot of this stuff by pulling cut up gibberish out of a top hat and moving lines around. so the 2 lines "here i'm alive"/"everything all of the time" don't have to make sense as if they were part of the same sentence. they're just two lines that felt right.

Personally, I prefer "alive"- it doesn't make sense with the other lyrics, but it fits with the joyful feel of the song.

I'm quite sure that it's allowed. It sounds like allowed and it fits better with the song and the next line.
If the whole song's kind of about global warming, how we all need to wake up to whats "really happening" in the world, then that line's about the excess that exists now, how everyone's allowed to have everything all of the time and thats what's effing everything up.
And I think he sings "this one is to the children" sometimes when preforming live but the album version in "the first of the children".

I agree. I hear "here I'm allowed everything all of the time", and to me Thom is singing about the "me" generation, selfishness and superficiality in that part of the song, also related to the title, whereas in other parts he is talking about the state of the world with "ice age coming" and so on. Typically brilliant lyrics and music by the way.
