New to the forum... and to Radiohead

A Dreamer

Hello everyone!

Let me tell you my story: for almost 15 years I couldn't get into Radiohead; I could say I had some resistance to listening to them, even though I liked what I knew from Ok Computer and The Bends.

However everything changed when I listened to A Moon Shaped Pool. The beauty in this album is something I haven't seen in a long time and songs like Daydreaming and True Love Waits moved me like few songs ever did.

Now I do want to get to know Radiohead, and I'd like some help, if possible. Where should I start? Should I begin with the previously mentioned OkC and TB (which are more "organic")? I'd love to know some opinions on how I should progress.

Anyway, I do appreciate the help. Sorry for the long first post. :)

Be well!

it's interesting that someone gets into Radiohead through A Moon Shaped Pool! i guess it means it's really good album - not just for fans but generally - which i wasn't sure about.

i think In Rainbows is the album to continue with...

The Bends, Pablo Honey and OK Computer aren't anything too special (if that's the word) and the rest could be too much to start with...

Thanks for the opinions, LotusFlower and Naomi Whats. Even if they diverge that much, eheheh. :)

That graphic is quite interesting. I am thinking about starting with In Rainbows (there is already some things I like about it) and then going to Ok Computer and Kid A, which are the ones the biggest impact, I guess.

Btw, LotusFlower, A Moon Shaped Pool is a brilliant album. And I'm starting to believe they are the best band, indeed.

if you liked amsp, you'll probably like in rainbows as well (which could then kick off loflo's flow chart)

I would say OK Computer or In Rainbows next.

In Rainbows next, OK Computer in full after, then Kid A followed by Amnesiac (recorded at the same time and intended to be a double-album), then The Bends to break up the dark mood, straight back to the darkness and claustrophobia with Hail to the Thief, then King of Limbs, then a smattering of B-Sides including:

worrywort

Fog (full band, not the solo piano)

Lewis (Mistreated)

Permanent Daylight

India Rubber

Killer Cars (if you liked The Bends)

Talk Show Host

A Reminder

Polyethylene (parts 1 & 2)

How I Made My Millions

The Amazing Sounds of Orgy

Gagging Order

Harry Patch (In Memory Of)

These Are My Twisted Words

Supercollider (if you liked Kid A/King of Limbs)

The Butcher (if you liked Kid A/King of Limbs)

Follow the b-sides with Thom's solo albums, The Eraser and Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, and maybe Phil Selway's solo albums. Then Pablo Honey.

interesting how people get to love a band's music. I came to Readiohead with "There there". Not that I liked the song too much, but they played it on MTV, and I thought, I heard of that band before, browsed Amazon, and everybody was mad about OK Computer. I ordered it, listened one time and thought "ok, it's good, but a masterpiece? No". Then I listened again and thought "Ok, it's ah....quite good", and again and again, and then I was on my knees and thought "oh my god, it's wonderful" and then I got all their music!

If I were trying to get somebody into Radiohead I would probably recommend that they listen to In Rainbows first.

But honestly, given that you know you like the band and want to get into their music more, I would start from the beginning and work my way through. One of the real pleasures of Radiohead is seeing how they developed - it's just amazing that the same band that recorded The Bends recorded, say, Amnesiac not that long afterwards.

I would follow the album release order ie.:

Pablo Honey

The Bends

OK Computer

Kid A

Amnesiac

Hail to the Thief

In Rainbows

The King of Limbs

A Moon Shaped Pool (which you've heard)

After that you can go back and fill in the gaps - the My Iron Lung EP, the Com Lag EP etc. The Amnesiac B-Sides are particularly brilliant.
