OKC improved with lyrics?

Recommended Posts

Just getting back into OKC for the first time in a while (a few years) and it is just absolutely an exciting listen.

I found when I first got into it a long time ago, it didn't really start to click until I read the lyrics along with the songs. Once I knew the lyrics, the songs improved immensely.

Did you guys find that to be the case? I think the lyrics are some of RH's best on OKC.

i was picturing myself covering subterranean homesick alien the other day and when i thought about the "UPTIGHT" part, i thought i would feel dumb singing that. which does not answer your question.

also i remember my mom walking into my bedroom once during the "that you choke" end of exit music, and she asked "ARTICHOKE?"

i dunno man. OKC has some great lyrics to me, in the way that some lines are really good, others kind of naive, others kind of cheesy, but thom never claimed that he was trying to achieve something specific with them, so i never think too much of them.

I actually think OKC has some of their worst lyrics (tho Pablo Honey and HttT are on another level of bad so it's not saying much). Almost all of it works great with the music regardless, and a lot of it is "iconic" but a lot of it is over the top

Airbag - Good lyrics

Paranoid Android - stupid lyrics

Homesick Alien - cheesy bad lyrics

Exit Music - cheese but maybe good lyrics

Let Down - sappy but kinda good

Karma Police - great lyrics

Fitter Happier - HAM FUCKING FISTED

Electioneering - ham fisted but not as bad as you'd think since they're really simple

Climbing Up the Walls - okay except for the "smell of a local man" cringeness

No Suprises - silly in the best way possible/great

Lucky - good/great lyrics

Tourist - meh

that's pretty harsh. i'd never go to the word 'stupid' to describe PA's lyrics. you're a tough grader.

they can't all be as great as a reminder and polyethylene pt.2

these are songs not epic poems. words and phrases sung with passion,(or recited by a computer voice.) you were right to say they work in the context of the songs.

i don't think this is cheese at all. pretty damn good if you ask me.

'Up above
aliens hover
making home movies
for the folks back home,

of all these weird creatures
who lock up their spirits,
drill holes in themselves
and live for their secrets.'

As someone who doesn't own the physical copies of the albums (yet), I must ask, how many have the lyrics in the booklet?

Lyrics are printed in the In Rainbows inlay.

No lyrics in the Kid A inlay.

Not sure about the others are I haven't owned physical copies of them for years.

Honestly, I think lyrics heighten the experience of a lot of Radiohead's music, not just OK Computer. A lot of the lyrics are obtuse and obfuscated to the point of being vague, but that's a lot of the fun in it. You're diving into Yorke's world and making whatever meaning of his expressions depending on how you feel in that moment.
