I think what people take to be "dashed off" in these songs is actually just how effortless they sound, even when they obviously weren't

 

I mean, there's a reason this album has been so puzzling to people, and I think it has to do with how there's a lot of familiar elements to the RH sound present on this album, but they've been totally recontextualized

 

There's a completely different mood to TKOL than really any of their past albums, a side to them that you could only catch in glimpses and usually just on B-sides at that

 

I'd say a lot of it does sound like maturity from the band, like they just knew exactly what they were doing this time, and so they did it, how they wanted to, without worry

My first impression was, well, first a "WTF?" confusion during Bloom and then multiple music orgasms really.

First part is in-your-face complex but groovy, many parts danceable (at least thom-style) and exciting, then at Lotus flower the mood begins to change, and the second part is calmer almost ethereally beautiful - Give up the ghost brought tears to my eyes - but i can still feel the connection between the two halves.

 

I'm not understanding some people saying this has a b-side feel to it -- to me all the tracks are equally strong and very polished and balanced, and the album flows perfectly. TKOL may even turn out to be my 2nd favourite Radiohead album after OKC but it's too early tell at this point.

 

And I love Colin on this album more than on any other - whatever super vitamins he's been taking recently it's working, he's really on fire.

 

I'd love to see / hear a live version of Feral, I hope they do it...

Ugh the MT Server is sooo annoying today! Tired of hitting refresh and getting error messages!!!

 

Here's an interesting observation from a Flaming Lips boardie.

 

But I have to retract what I was saying, and what you're syaing Inky, that this soudns less like a Radiohead album and more liek a Thom solo album... What it soudns like is that the STARTED OUT with these band-oriented songs (liek In Rainbows or HTTT), recorded it all, but then went in and manipulated, treated and and just plain transformed all the individual "band elements" of each song, thus making the whole recording something completely new. So it's like they recorded this "normal song" but then took the drums and resampled them in to glitches... took a lot of the guitars and morphed them into just sounds... Thom's vocals seem even more distant and blurry here. What I'm saying that it IS a Radiohead "band" record, but they took it and turned it inside out, you dig?

 

 

Also somethign dawned on me, that if you look at the lyrics of Bloom and the sound design of it, it seems like it's about the author beginning exisiting the waking world and entering a dream-state; likewise Separator is the author waking from the dream-state. So, tying in the manipulations of the band's recordings into this otherworldly soundscape, could The King of Limbs literally be a dream?

in short: I love this album from the first listen. after I digested it a bit I wrote to a friend of mine: there's this dreamy, fairytale-like atmosphere/quality in this record, which makes the whole absolutely unique.

 

and afterwards I found this (below) and everything became clear, and everything makes sense, all these trees, limbs, woods, sonic densities, nature sounds, a somewhat organic pulse througout all the songs, etc...

What I'm beginning to feel right now is the really dense and unique narrative that underlies the whole album. This whole "Let's get lost in midnight fog" thing. The video for "There There" keeps popping up in my mind.

 

And - sadly enough - MTV has written the review that comes nearest to this impression:

 

"There is a damp musk to the album, a foreboding sense of inevitability. Like being lost in a dense forest, the light slowly fading, the path becoming increasingly choked. It is a claustrophobia that previously only existed in nature, a kind that is becoming rarer and rarer as we humans carry our ugly sprawl to each corner of the globe. And that idea is just as terrifying as being stranded in a forest — if not more so."

Today I went driving in glorious sunshine while spinning this motherfucker 3 more times. I have to say that it is my all time fav RH album. I loved KidAmnesiac, but it seemed the vibe of much of that was "look how clever and avante garde we are". With TKOL they have taken all of the things that they have learned and keep near and dear to themselves, streamlined it, adavnced it, and let it drip onto record, without a hint of forcing themselves.

 

I'll have much more to say about the music later, but no album is perfect, and the only quibble I have right now is tracks 6 and 7 being together and track 8 ending the album. (Sorry I don't have a grip on song titles yet, haha.) My dream sequence would be:

 

1,2,3,7,4,5,8,6.

 

As it stands, tracks 6 and 7....are there any more songs in the RH canon that are as hauntingly gorgeous as these? Some people in this thread keep talking about no really special/climax moments. Are they hearing a different album from the one I am playing?

I'll add this:

 

Never, ever before have I experienced an album that so instantly makes me want to replay it, right after that last note fades out. Again, again and again. It's sick.

 

At first, it wasn't even because I liked it. I don't know, it's like it has this seducing magic quality. It's not because of individual songs either, it's just something about the whole experience that I have to be part of again. In Rainbows was not like this, not at all.

 

Maybe it's just because it's so short and finishes so suddenly that I just put it on repeat automaticly.

Yeah even though I didn't like it the first four times I heard it, I felt a need to put it back on again.

 

Sixth listen now and things are definitely steadily improving, this has started to move into the 7/10 range but I wouldn't be surprised if it went higher than that.

I gotta say, after some more spins, that Codex is almost unashamedly/embarrasingly a ripoff of Pyramid Song. Of course they are allowed to rip themselves off. And, they have taken that ripoff to a new level. Much more subtlety and maturity now. And succintness. But even the lyrics of Codex make me think of Pyramid Song video. (I'm not complaining at all.)

 

Anyway, I'm beyond first impressions. Time to make an embarrassing new thread.....

I deliberately avoided this place for the last 24 hours because so I could take the album in on my own and all, and so now I'll give my 2 cents...

 

First off, I like it. A lot. More with each listen, as is usually the case with this band. I'm surprised at how little I'm disappointed by it only being 8 songs long. It just doesn't feel super short to me, even though it's less than 40 minutes. It feels complete.

 

While I can't help but miss the likes of The Present Tense and Wake Me, etc. I also don't think they would have fit in with this album. It has a very ethereal, spacey feeling to it and those songs don't so much. Also, them not appearing gives me hope that there will be another album, in spite of so many people always speculating that the latest album must be the last.

 

It was really cool being surprised by the songs, having no preconceptions. It was also a fun surprise when Separator turned out to be Mouse Dog Bird because I really loved that one. I never expected Magpie to actually make it onto an album-- I don't know why, I just didn't.

 

Track-by-track first impressions:

 

Bloom-- I really love the vocals on this one. It's a great opener. More subtle than their openers usually are, I think, but it works really well here. One of my initial favorites.

 

MorningMrMagpie-- As I said above, this was surprising to see. Love the way it ends, especially.

 

Little By Little-- This song, lyrically, sounds like a follow up to Jigsaw. It's pretty groovy though and I can't help but like it, though it might be my least liked.

 

Feral--Great. Really fits with the album cover for me. Although when I was trying to figure out what he's saying (if anything) for the longest time all I could hear at one point was "jew...jew...jew...jew..."

 

Lotus Flower-- A favorite of mine from the boots and continuing to be one here. This song is just all kinds of lovliness. It's the first I heard of the album since I watched the video before downloading. Loved it!

 

Codex-- This song struck me as the most "traditional" Radiohead sounding song, and so it couldn't not be loved. I found it interesting that this is the only real slow tempo song on the album. I mean, GutG is too, but not like this. Normally, they seem to have more of a balance and this time the album is very energetic with this distinct exception. It's a welcome respite though and I love the singing here too. (I love the singing throughout, really).

 

Give Up the Ghost-- Another favorite from the boots and a definite high point. Although I'm uncertain if I like it more than the bootleg version yet.

 

Separator-- I was thrilled when I realized this was Mouse Dog Bird. I felt that song had to be on the same album as Lotus Flower. Lyrically, they just belong together. Can't quite explain why. But this song is just fantastic. I also found the fact that the album ends with the lines "if you think this is over then you're wrong" interesting and it makes me hopeful that this also won't be the last. (I know it's not the last line, but still.)

 

 

All in all, I really like it and I can't wait to get my Newspaper album. Or to find out what the two tracks on the special bonus are (assuming whoever gets it actually uploads and shares, etc.) Who knows, maybe I'll be the lucky one... *dreams*
