What exactly is Ed doing to make that strange noise at 2:26 here in The Gloaming (Saitama): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XB470fFc1c You get a rare glimpse of his pedalboard as he's making the noise at 2:40, holding two different pedals but I can't make out what they are. Is this a sample? I get the feeling that Ed being the pedal maestro he is, that he made the sound from the pedals and not from some computerized sample or whatnot. We also hear another version of this noise in the Live From the Basement vid. Anyone have any idea what this could be? There should be a thread dedicated just to how we can make sweet Ed O'Brien noises!

Radiohead has a lot of insane noises that just absolutely baffle me. thanks a lot cartwheels, your information really helped. i cant wait to go home and try it out. and thank you musickiks, that info helped me a lot. one thing that really interested me is that the sounds of that tin can sounds like the part in Morning Bell (off of Amnesiac) where Ed does something at 1:36-2:10. Any idea what that could be? Also I have another question for you, how do you do the tin can sound live? Like, how do you sample it with all the effects and stuff? I want to be able to record me shaking a tin can (big can with big nail im assuming) and then record it onto my korg kaoss pad or something and add the effects there...is that possible? and is there any way you can find out exactly what effects u used? because it sounds all glitchy and awesome and that glitch sound is something im really going for. Also, what if I wanted to sample other sounds? Like for example, there is a muse song (close enough to radiohead!) called unintended ( ) and at 1:05-1:08 there is a delay cymbal thing. i wanna be able to create that and sample it live. do i just record my drummer playing cymbals, and add delay on a kaoss pad or something? also at 2:01-2:05 there is a really weird noise similar to the ones used in your songs...any idea what that could be? regardless thank you so much everyone. I think I'm just gonna use this thread as a general "radiohead weird noises" thread since I'm baffled by a lot of stuff they do. i know i have a lot of questions and im really annoying but im just A. excited to meet other awesome radiohead fans and B. being driven crazy by some of the stuff these guys can do (as im sure we all are!).

and cartwheels, what whammy effect is it. the +1 octave or the +1 octave HARMONY setting (found on the left side)? So it's whammy, some sort of phaser, and delay/reverb? It sounds so angelic. and it sounds like hes starting the note without the whammy and then introducing the octave at the END where it gets all shimmery and beautiful. i just havent heard any combo of pedals that can make it sound like THAT. At 1:32-1:34, you hear him do it! and its even better at 1:50-1:52 if that clears anything up.

Interesting. I've listened to some of your music at your bandcamp thing and I can see you've kinda have that Radiohead atmospheric sound vibe going on and I love it!! I'm REALLY interested in how you achieve certain sounds. Could you elaborate on how you achieved. I know this is kinda derailing the thread but I figure we can just use this as a general topic for figuring out wacky atmospheric cool noises: Outpost No. 23: 1:28-1:40: Some weird sound is trickling in and at the end of it, it sounds like some weird ring mod is being put over it? 1:59-2:03: Some weird keyboard track? During the guitar solo of the same song, are you taking a coin and scratching the strings? What kind of effect is on it? Burning Man: 1:25-1:32: There is a shimmer effect here! Is this just trem and space echo? 1:57-2:00: the low sounding keyboard track. What is that? its very haunting! 3:06-3:17: the spooky outro For the part at 1:28-1:40 in Outpost No. 23, the part I was referring to sounds similar to the part in Morning Bell that starts at like 1:36 and ends at 2:10. I LOVE THAT PART. Does anyone know how thats done? It's all glitchy and awesome...and they don't do it live! Sorry for all the questions. I just really like your music and obviously Radiohead's!

gahhh i would do anything to look at a track by track of that song. also i would love to look at a track by track of bulletproof (i wish i was). the sounds that ed and jonny make are INSANE. and again I have absolutely NO IDEA how they do any of them or what effects they are using. sigh.

Subterranean Homesick Alien is a sonic mystery and I'm amazed at all its complexity. At 1:26-1:31, there is this line that slowly crescendos in and then is REALLY apparent at 1:31 in the background. It's like a shimmery effect. It sounds like they're just playing one note and it's being like slowly brought in but it sounds so angelic. Any ideas?? I really wanna use ideas like this in my music and stuff. if i may elaborate it is the part that starts off relatively quiet, it sounds like he is playing one note that gets louder and louder in volume until at 1:31 it is really loud and sounds like there is all this shimmer and echo and whatever on it.

I tried a DigiTech Whammy 2 and 1 Octaves up and it sounds like complete shit. It definitely can't be that. Does anyone have any idea?? Btw, this is my first post. Glad to meet you fellow RH fans!
